Pedestrian engulfed by FIREBALL

The incident occurred on the Boulevard of the Allies near Wood Street about 5 p.m. when, for an unknown reason, the transformer exploded, sending flames up through the grate and engulfing Ms. Novotny. The umbrella she had been holding was consumed by the flames as she stood dazed and badly burned. The blast caused the ground to rumble Downtown, knocked out power at an adjacent apartment building, interrupted dance classes at Point Park University and caused gridlock during the height of rush hour. Duquesne Light spokesman Joe Vallarian said today the investigation into why the transformer exploded is continuing. He said the probe would take some time to complete.
